Hemorrhoids are small lumps of tissues in the anal area. It usually occurs when a blood vessel gets swollen and is pushed out of the rectum. Hemorrhoids may look like small lumps of grapes forming outside the anus area, although it is possible for them to form inside, when it is impossible to see them. The actual size and shape of hemorrhoids vary from one person to another.

The average size of hemorrhoids is anywhere between the size of a pea to the size of a grape, growing alone or in small clusters. Some hemorrhoids may look flat, while others are full in form. They may also look wrinkled like raisins and protrude outside of the anus. It is possible to push them back up to prevent further discomfort. Hemorrhoids can grow big in shape and in number that they cover the entire anus area.

When you try to feel the lumps, they’re soft and cushiony. At first, you’ll think that they’re merely small bumps that would go in a while. Some would, but others tend to protrude heavily after some time. External hemorrhoids are plain to see. Just use a mirror and you can diagnose the presence of this disease yourself. It isn’t possible to do that with internal hemorrhoids, though. For this condition, it is best that you go see your doctor.

A lot of people think that they have hemorrhoids when they see blood in their anus. However, anal fissures may also cause this problem. But you’ll know you have hemorrhoids if there are swollen areas around the rectum and in the blood vessels. They can be very painful and sensitive too. The presence of this disease makes it hard for the patient to practice good personal care and hygiene. Clots may also occur in the outer parts. While the lumps are mostly soft, it could become firm and very painful to the touch. You are likely to find hemorrhoids forming on the rim of the anal opening.

People with hemorrhoids will suffer a series of symptoms. These symptoms will serve as the tell-tale signs of the disease. 1. Bleeding
People with hemorrhoids are likely to see blood in their stools. The mere presence of blood in the wastes is enough to force you to see your doctor. It is not normal to see blood coming out of your body. While it may mean hemorrhoids, you might want to be truly sure, as it may be caused by a much worse health condition. Same goes if you see blood in the tissue paper that you used.

2. Itching
Hemorrhoids can be very itchy, especially the external type of this disease. Itchiness in the rectum may be caused by other factors. But if it is coupled with blood, it is most likely going to be a case of hemorrhoids.

3. Pain in the anal area
Pain is the unmistakable sign of a disease. If you experience pain in any part of your body, you know for sure that there’s something wrong in you. Pain in the anal area means hemorrhoids. It is best that you see your doctor on even the slightest presence of pain so that the condition will not get any worse.

4. Lumps forming on the rectal area
If you have hemorrhoids, you’ll feel small soft lumps in your anus. This is an indication that there’s a problem in the tissues surrounding rectum. Swelling is one of the most common symptoms of this disease. The swollen part may or may not be painful. But it is an abnormality just the same. It is not right to just ignore it.

Hemorrhoids, or the soft masses of tissues on the rectum, may be caused by a lot of factors. Often times, the condition is brought about by the increased pressure in the veins located in the anal area. Straining during bowel movements is likely to cause this problem. This is because when you move wastes, the tissues in the anus are filled up with blood. If you strain, more pressure is created causing the veins in the tissues to stretch and swell. Constipation, diarrhea, or simply sitting too long on the toilet may give rise to this disease as well.

Pregnancy is another cause for hemorrhoids. Pregnant women tend to have increased blood pressure in the pelvic area because of the growing baby inside them. And during the time they deliver the baby, the condition may get worse. As they push the baby during labor, the pressure is doubled or even tripled in the problem areas, leading to an exaggerated case of hemorrhoid.

Health problems such as tumors forming in the pelvic area may lead to this disease as well. When the tumors press on the veins that drain upward from the anus, the veins are going to be swollen and painful. This is another reason why hemorrhoids are common to people with pre-existing pelvic and anal health conditions.

Other causes are obesity and performing extraneous activities like lifting heavy objects. Anything that may cause you to strain your bowel movements may trigger the disease. Ageing is another cause of hemorrhoids. This is because when one ages, the muscles and the tissues of the anal canal deteriorates, increasing the risks of developing the disease.

There are three types of hemorrhoids – internal hemorrhoids, prolapsed hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids affect the veins inside the rectal area. This type of hemorrhoid doesn’t cause too much pain, although it may conveniently bleed from time to time.

Internal hemorrhoids is the most common of the three, often caused by increased pressure within the internal hemorrhoidal veins - a part of the several groups of veins that surround the rectum and anus.

Prolapsed hemorrhoids start from the inner part of the body stretching down to the outer part of the anus. It may even go out of the rectum, although it can be pushed back up gently to avoid soreness

External hemorrhoids are the ones that affect the outer veins of the anus. This is the itchiest and most painful type of hemorrhoid. It can also crack down and bleed, causing a great deal of discomfort to the patient.

Hemorrhoids often refer to the swollen veins found on the anus or the rectum. This condition is usually painful, although they are rarely serious. The inflammation occurs when the tissues in the anal canal form clumps or masses, restraining the normal flow of blood to certain body parts.
